The New York Knicks are a professional basketball team based in New York City, New York. The Knicks compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. The team plays its home games at Madison Square Garden, an arena they share with the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL). They are one of two NBA teams located in New York City; the other team is the Brooklyn Nets. Alongside the Boston Celtics, the Knicks are one of two original NBA teams still located in its original city.

The Knicks were successful during their early years and were constant playoff contenders under the leadership of future Hall of Fame head coach Joe Lapchick. Beginning in 1950, the franchise made three consecutive appearances in the NBA Finals, all of which were losing efforts. Lapchick resigned in 1956 and guided them to playoff berths in 1957 and 1958. Dick McGuire became head coach in 1959 and led them to six consecutive playoff appearances and their seventh Finals appearance, which was their first winning effort, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers for their only championship. In 1970, after McGuire retired, Willis Reed was named head coach; he led them to two consecutive Finals victories over Los Angeles with a then-healthy Willis providing leadership and inspiration that lifted team morale and helpedsecure crucial game-winning plays, culminating with his momentous Game 7 comeback from a serious thigh injury which inspired teammates to defeat Los Angeles 112–100 for their first title since 1954. Such promising beginnings led to inconsistency; however, for much of the next two decades (1970s–1990s), they were characterized by strong play early followed by sporadic post-season appearances as well as having some bad luck with injuries, particularly come playoff time.

This season has been shrouded with controversy ever since Carmelo Anthony trade rumors began circulating earlier this year. However, Kristaps Porzingis has played outstanding basketball as he averaging 20 points per game along with 7 rebounds per game. With Jeff Hornacek at the helm, will this be finally be the year that the Knicks make it back to relevancy?
