In the National League, the Chicago Cubs won their second consecutive division title, and the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers both clinched wild card spots. The Colorado Rockies defeated the Cubs in the NL Wild Card Game before losing to the Dodgers in the National League Division Series. The Brewers defeated the Dodgers in game seven of the NLCS to advance to their first World Series appearance since 1982.
In June, LeBron James led the Cleveland Cavaliers to their fourth consecutive NBA Finals appearance, becoming only the third team ever to do so. They were again matched up against his former team, the Golden State Warriors, who they had faced in three of those Finals appearances (2015, 2016 and 2017); this was their fourth consecutive Finals meeting overall. The Warriors won this rubber match in a four-game sweep to win their third championship in four years and cement themselves as one of basketball’s all-time greatest teams.
The Washington Capitals won their first Stanley Cup by defeating the Vegas Golden Knights four games to one; it was also Washington’s first championship since they joined the NHL as an expansion team in 1974. Alexander Ovechkin was awarded both Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP and Hart Memorial Trophy as regular season MVP; he became only the eighth player to win both awards in his career and only the second player (after Mario Lemieux) to win all three awards – an Olympic gold medal, a World Championship gold medal, a Stanley Cup and both MVP trophies – during his career.
